This standard is almost identical to the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Standard and adopts the same methodology and general structure, but is directed at safety rather than environment. Any company with ISO 14001 in place will find it relatively easy to integrate OHSAS 18001 within an ISO 14001 system. The ISO 14001 environmental standard has proven to be one of the most effective of the standards and one of best received by those who have implemented its requirements. It is for this reason that OHSAS 18001 has mirrored its requirements. The benefits in terms of safety improvement and control should also mirror the success of ISO 14001 for those who implement its requirements.

UKAS and ANAB are embarking on pilot schemes with the aim of accrediting suitable Certification Bodies to enable them to provide clients with accredited OHSAS 18001 certificates. AJA has been active in this field for many years now and have applied to take part in these pilot schemes with the hope of achieving accreditation later in 2006.
